Employment in June was up 0.5% from May. The unemployment rate was 7.9%, down from 8.1% in May. Construction employment was up 0.9% from May, while manufacturing employment decreased 0.8% from May. June's employment increased by 93,2100 positions, and was the sixth consecutive monthly gain. Since the start of the upward trend in July 2009, employment has risen by 2.4% or 403,000. In June, employment stood at 17.2 million, up 0.5% from May, and 2.2% higher than in June 2009. Full-time employment grew by 48,900 from May, while part-time employment was up 44,200 from the previous month. Full-time employment was up by 345,000 from June 2009, with part-time gaining 27,300 over the same period. Employment over the past year grew in nine provinces, led by Ontario (+3.1%), followed by Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Manitoba, each with a 2.3% growth rate. Employment in New Brunswick was down 1.4% from May. Total employment gains of 200,400 have occurred in Ontario since June 2009. Its unemployment rate was 8.3% in June, down from 8.9% in May. Quebec's total employment gain since June 2009 was 88,700. Its unemployment rate in June was 7.8%, down from 8.0% in May. Since June 2009, employment in the goods-producing sector has risen 1.1% while employment in the services-producing sector has grown by 2.5% over the same period. The construction industry gained 11,000 jobs in June over May, bringing total construction employment to 1,223,700, which is an increase of 73,300 construction jobs (+6.4%) from June 2009. Total manufacturing employment was down 1.3% from June 2009. This was a decline of 22,600 jobs since the same month last year. Manufacturing employment was down 14,300 (-0.8%) from May to June this year. The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was up 0.8% in June from May to a total of 2,716,400. That was 3.8% higher than in June 2009. Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 120,700 in June 2010 over June 2009 and increased by 13,700 from May. Employment among adult men was up 219,100 in June 2010 over June 2009 and grew by 58,800 from May. Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) advanced by 32,600 since last June, and was up by 20,700 from May. In June, private sector employment grew by 51,900 from May, and was 2.7% higher than in June 2009. Self-employment was up 1.0% in June over May, but was 0.2% lower than in June 2009. Public sector employment was up 0.5% from May, and grew 2.5% from June 2009. |
