Employment in November was up 0.1% from October. The unemployment rate was unchanged from October at 6.9%.  Construction employment fell by 1.3% from October while manufacturing employment increased 1.5% from a month earlier.

In November, employment stood at 17.8 million, up 1.0% from November 2012.  Full-time employment grew by 1,400 from October, while part-time employment increased by 20,000 from the previous month.  Full-time employment was up by 111,400 from
November 2012, while part-time increased by 67,600 over the same period.

Employment over the past year grew in six provinces, led by Alberta (+3.6%),  Saskatchewan (+2.8%) and Ontario (+1.3%).  The employment growth rate in Quebec was 0.4%.   Employment from a year earlier was down 0.7% in British Columbia and dropped 0.6% in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Total employment gains of 85,700 have occurred in Ontario since November 2012.  Its unemployment rate was 7.2% in November, down from 7.4% in October.  Quebec’s total employment increase since November 2012 was 17,500.  Its unemployment rate in November was 7.2%, down from 7.5% in October.

Since November 2012, employment in the goods-producing sector has increased by 1.0% and in the services-producing sector it has also grown by 1.0%.

The construction industry lost 17,500 jobs in November over October, bringing total construction employment to 1,315,400, which is an increase of 56,900 construction jobs (+4.5%) from November 2012.

Total manufacturing employment was up 24,900 from October to 1,738,100 jobs.  That was a loss of 44,200 positions (-2.5%) since the same month last year.

The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was down 7,600 in November from October and totaled 2,700,900.  That was a gain of 0.8% from November 2012.

Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 90,200 in November 2013 over November 2012 and increased by 18,900 from October.  Employment among adult men was up 90,600 in November 2013 over November 2012 and grew by 28,900 from October.  Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) fell by 1,800 since November 2012, and was down by 26,400 from October.

In November, private sector employment was up 31,400 from October, and increased 1.6% from November 2012.  Self-employment was up 0.7% in November over October, and increased by 1.3% from November 2012.  Public sector employment was down 0.8% in November from October and decreased 1.2.% from November 2012.  Total private sector employment in November was 11,507,000; self-employment was 2,706,400; and public sector employment was 3,602,200.
