Employment in November was down 0.1% from October. The unemployment rate was 6.6%, up from 6.5% in October.  Construction employment was down 0.4% from October while manufacturing employment was unchanged from a month earlier.

In October, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 0.8% from November 2013.  Full-time employment grew by 5,700 from October, while part-time employment decreased by 16,300 from the previous month.  Full-time employment was up by 80,800 from November 2013, while part-time increased by 65,300 over the same period.

Employment over the past year grew in six provinces.  Saskatchewan (+2.7%),  Alberta (+2.2%)  and British Columbia (+2.0%) led the way.  The employment growth rate in Ontario was  +0.8%.   Employment from a year earlier was down most in Newfoundland and Labrador (-0.9%) followed by New Brunswick and Quebec, both at -0.6%.

Total employment gains of 53,100 have occurred in Ontario since November 2013.  Its unemployment rate was 7.0% in November, up from 6.5% in October.  Quebec’s total employment decrease since November 2013 was 25,200.  Its unemployment rate in November was 7.6%, down from 7.7% in October.
Since November 2013, employment both in the goods-producing sector and in the services-producing sector grew by 0.8%.

The construction industry lost 5,300 jobs in November over October bringing total construction employment to 1,350,500, which is an increase of 37,300 construction jobs (+2.8%) from November 2013.    Total manufacturing employment was down 400 from October to 1,752,300 jobs.  That was a gain of 9,700 positions (0.6%) since November 2013.

The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was down 41,600 in November from October and totaled 2,697,300.  That was a loss of 0.1% from November 2013.

Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 18,400 in November 2014 over November 2013 and increased by 3,900 from October.  Their unemployment rate was 5.2%.  Employment among adult men was up 71,300 in November 2014 over November 2013 but fell by 9,300 from October.  Their unemployment rate was 5.8%.  Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) was up by 56,400 since November 2013, and grew by 4,400 from September.  Their unemployment rate was 13.0%.

In November, private sector employment was down 45,600 from October, but grew by 61,800 from November 2013.  Self-employment was up 12,300 in November over October, and increased 39,100 from November 2013.  Public sector employment was up 0.6% in November from October and grew by 1.3% from November 2013.  Total private sector employment in     November was 11,569,400; self-employment was 2,737,700; and public sector employment was 3,650,800.
