Employment in October increased by 44,100 from September.  The unemployment rate was 7.0%, down from 7.1% in September.  Construction employment was down 0.7% from September and manufacturing employment was up 0.4% from a month earlier.

In October, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 0.2% from October 2014.  Full-time employment grew by 9,000 from September, while part-time employment increased by 35,400 from the previous month.  Full time employment was up by 181,500 from October 2014, while part-time employment fell by 38,100 over the same period.

Employment over the past year grew in seven provinces.  British Columbia, with a 3.0% annualized growth rate, led the way followed by both Quebec and Manitoba (+1.2%).  The employment growth rate in Ontario was 0.1%.  Employment from a year earlier was down most in Newfoundland and Labrador (-1.1%) followed by Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan, both at -0.1%.

Total employment gains of 7,500 have occurred on Ontario since October 2014.  Its unemployment rate in October was 6.8%, down from 6.9% in September.  Quebec’s total employment increase since October 2014 was 47,200.  Its unemployment rate in October was 7.7%, unchanged from September.

Since October 2014, employment in the goods-producing sector was down by 1.4% and in the services-producing sector grew by 1.4%.

The construction industry lost 9,400 jobs in October over September, bringing total construction employment to 1,357,000 which is a decrease of 24,000 from October 2014.  Total manufacturing employment was up 6,500 from September to 1,712,300 jobs.  This was an increase of 800 positions from October 2014.

The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was up 17,600 in October from September and totaled 2,748,000, down 0.1% from October 2014.

Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 71,700 in October 2015 over October 2014 and increased by 14,600 from September.  Their unemployment rate was 5.5%.  Employment among adult men was up 116,200 in October 2015 over October 2014 and grew by 15,800 from September.  Their unemployment rate was 6.2%.   Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) was down 44,600 since October 2014 but increased by 14,100 from September.  Their unemployment rate was 13.3%.

In October, private sector employment was up 41,300 from September and increased by 29,100 from October 2014.  Self-employment fell by 27,300 in October over September but increased by 17,400 from October 2014.  Public sector employment was up 30,500 from September and grew by 96,900 from October 2014.  Total private sector employment in October was 11,640,600; self-employment was 2,750,100.
