Employment in September was up 0.4% from August. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, unchanged from August. Construction employment was up 0.5% from August while manufacturing employment increased 0.4% from a month earlier.
In September, employment stood at 18.1 million, up 0.8% from September 2015. Full-time employment grew by 67,200 from August, while part-time employment increased by 23,000 from the previous month. Full time employment was up by 50,200 from September 2015, while part-time employment increased by 88,500 over the same period.
Employment over the past 12 months grew in four provinces. British Columbia, with a 2.6% annualized growth rate, led the way. Ontario’s annualized growth rate was 1.2% while the year-over -year increase in Quebec was 1.5%. Employment from a year earlier was down most in Prince Edward Island (-2.6%) followed by Alberta (-2.0%).
Total employment gains of 82,100 have occurred in Ontario since September 2015. Its unemployment rate in September was 6.6%, down from 6.7% in August. Quebec’s total employment increase since September 2015 was 60,600. Its unemployment rate in September was 6.9%, down from 7.1% in August.
Since September 2015, employment in the goods-producing sector was down 0.9% and in the services-producing sector grew by 1.2%.
The construction industry gained 6,400 jobs in September over August, bringing total construction employment to 1,381,500 which is an increase of 15,600 from September 2015. Total manufacturing employment was up 6,300 from August to 1,698,000 jobs. This was a decrease of 12,200 positions from September 2015.
The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade decreased by 11,000 in September from August and totaled 2,730,600, down 1.4% from September 2015.
Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 152,700 in September 2016 over September 2015 and increased by 36,000 from August. Their unemployment rate was 5.3%. Employment among adult men was up 20,900 in September 2016 over September 2015 and grew by 21,900 from August. Their unemployment rate was 6.6%. Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) was down 34,800 since September 2015 but increased by 9,300 from August. Their unemployment rate was 13.2%.
In September, private sector employment was up 17,900 from August and increased by 106,000 from September 2015. Self-employment grew by 50,100 in September over August and increased by 10,700 from September 2015. Public sector employment was down 800 from August but increased by 22,100 from September 2015. Total private sector employment in September was 11,706,100; self-employment was 2,787,700.
