Wholesalers sold $55.4 billion worth of goods and services in July, unchanged from June and 4.2% higher than in July 2014. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 3.7% from July 2014. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 0.4% in July from June. Annualized wholesale sales grew in nine provinces. Prince Edward Island (+9.3%) led the way, followed by Ontario (+8.2%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (+6.4%). Quebec’s wholesale sales were up 2.7% from July 2014. The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.3% in August compared with August 2014, unchanged from July’s rate of annualized increase. The CPI in August for goods was up 0.7% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 1.8%. Gasoline prices decreased 12.6% from August 2014, after falling 12.2% in July. Overall, energy prices fell 7.2% between August 2014 and August 2015, following a 7.4% annualized rate of decrease in July. Municipalities issued $7.7 billion worth of building permits in July, down 0.6% from June and 13.4% lower than in July 2014. Four provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. Prince Edward Island recorded a 71.8% year-over-year gain while Saskatchewan posted a 25.4% increase. The largest annualized losses occurred in Manitoba (-55.3%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-37.8%). Ontario’s decline from July 2014 was 10.8% while Quebec reported a 39.1% loss. Employment in August increased by 12,000 from July. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, up from 6.8% in July. Construction employment was down 0.3% from July while manufacturing employment fell by 0.2% from a month earlier. In August, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 1.1% from August 2014. Full-time employment grew by 54,400 from July, while part-time employment fell by 42,400 from the previous month.
