Municipalities issued $6.2 billion worth of building permits in November, down 17.9% from October but 0.2% higher than in November 2011. Double-digit annualized increases over November occurred in five provinces, down from seven provinces with this status in October. Wholesalers sold $49.2 billion worth of goods and services in October, up 0.9% from September and 2.2% higher than in October 2011. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 1.0% from October 2011. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 0.8% in October from September. Annualized wholesale sales grew in seven provinces. Nova Scotia (+8.2%) led the way, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador (+7.0%) and Quebec (+6.0%). Employment in December increased by 40,000 positions from November. The unemployment rate decreased from 7.2% in November to 7.1% in December, the lowest in four years.
